Comprehensive Auto Insurance in Florida

Because Accidents Aren’t the Only Thing That Can Destroy Your Car

Theft. Hurricanes. Vandalism. Falling Trees. One Policy Covers Them All.

Your car doesn’t have to be in an accident to cost you thousands.

A stolen catalytic converter. A tree limb dropped by a summer thunderstorm. A broken windshield from road debris on I-75. Hail damage after a February cold front. None of these involve a collision — and none of them are covered by collision insurance or your basic Florida policy.

That’s the gap comprehensive coverage fills.

Comprehensive Auto Insurance — Because Accidents Aren't the Only Thing That Can Destroy Your Car

Your car doesn't have to be in an accident to cost you thousands. A stolen catalytic converter. A tree limb dropped by a summer thunderstorm. A broken windshield from road debris on I-75. Hail damage after a February cold front. None of these involve a collision — and none of them are covered by collision insurance or your basic Florida policy. That's the gap comprehensive coverage fills.

What Comprehensive Coverage Is

Comprehensive insurance — sometimes listed as “other than collision” on your policy — pays to repair or replace your vehicle when it’s damaged by something other than a crash. It’s the coverage that handles the events you can’t predict and can’t prevent.

In Florida, comprehensive coverage is not required by state law. The state only mandates $10,000 in PIP and $10,000 in PDL. But if you’re financing or leasing your vehicle, your lender will almost certainly require comprehensive coverage. And even if your car is paid off, the math often makes the case on its own.

What It Covers

Theft and Vandalism

If your car is stolen from a parking lot or keyed overnight, comprehensive pays for the loss or repairs.

Weather and Natural Disasters

Florida sees hurricanes, tropical storms, hail, lightning, tornadoes, and flash floods — sometimes all in the same week. Comprehensive coverage pays for damage from all of them. In Southwest Florida, this is the coverage most likely to save you from a five-figure repair bill.

Fire and Explosions

Whether it’s an electrical fire under the hood or damage from a nearby explosion, comprehensive covers the repair or replacement.

Falling Objects

Tree branches, construction debris, cargo from another vehicle on the highway — if something falls onto your car and causes damage, comprehensive handles it.

Animal Collisions

Hitting a deer, a wild boar, or any animal on the road is covered under comprehensive, not collision. Florida’s rural areas — including corridors around Lehigh Acres and Estero — see this more than most drivers expect.

Glass Damage

Cracked or shattered windshields and windows are covered. Under Florida law, windshield replacement is often covered with no out-of-pocket deductible, depending on your policy.

Civil Disturbance

Damage caused by riots or civil unrest falls under comprehensive coverage.

What It Does NOT Cover

Comprehensive coverage has clear boundaries:

Collision damage — if you rear-end another car or hit a guardrail, that’s collision coverage, not comprehensive

Medical expenses — your PIP or MedPay coverage handles your medical bills

Other people’s property — your Property Damage Liability covers damage you cause to someone else’s vehicle or property

Mechanical breakdowns — comprehensive covers damage from external events, not wear-and-tear or mechanical failure

How Deductibles Work

Every comprehensive policy includes a deductible — the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance picks up the rest. Common deductible levels are $250, $500, and $1,000.

The tradeoff is simple:

A higher deductible lowers your monthly premium but increases your out-of-pocket cost when you file a claim.

A lower deductible raises your premium but means less cash out of your pocket at claim time.

Our agents help you find the deductible that balances your monthly budget with your tolerance for out-of-pocket risk.

Why It Matters in Southwest Florida

Florida ranks among the top states for vehicle theft, weather-related damage, and uninsured drivers. Southwest Florida adds its own variables:

Hurricane season runs June through November — wind, flooding, and debris cause billions in vehicle damage statewide every year.

Summer thunderstorms in Lee and Collier Counties regularly produce hail, lightning, and flash flooding.

Wildlife corridors between Lehigh Acres, Estero, and the rural interior mean animal collisions happen more frequently than in urban metros.

Comprehensive coverage is the single best defense against the damage you can’t control.

Is It Worth It?

Ask yourself two questions:

Could you replace your car out of pocket tomorrow? If not, comprehensive coverage keeps one bad storm from turning into a financial crisis.

What would it cost to go without a car for weeks? Even if the damage is repairable, parts delays and shop backlogs can stretch timelines. Comprehensive coverage — combined with rental reimbursement — keeps your life moving.

If your vehicle is worth more than a few thousand dollars, comprehensive coverage almost always makes financial sense.

Why Goodlad & Swank

We’re not the insurance company. We’re your agent — and that distinction matters.

Independent, not captive. A captive agent sells one company’s products. We represent dozens of carriers, which means we can shop the entire market and find the policy that actually fits your situation.

Local, not remote. Our office is at 702 Leeland Heights Blvd W in Lehigh Acres. We serve Lee and Collier Counties — Lehigh Acres, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Estero, and Naples. You’re not a policy number. You’re a neighbor.

Family-owned since 2009. Butch Swank built this agency on one idea: change the way people feel about their insurance agency. Our team — Butch, Stephanie, Mary, and the rest — treats every client like family, because that’s how this business should work.

Community-rooted. Butch serves on the Board of Lehigh Regional Medical Center, co-founded the East Lee Education Cooperative, and established the Watch D.O.G.S. program at Lehigh Elementary. Mary sits on the Board for Lehigh Community Services. We don’t just work here — we live here.
