Teen Driver Insurance in Florida

Adding a Teen Driver Doesn’t Have to Double Your Insurance Bill

What Parents Need to Know Before They Hand Over the Keys

The day your teenager gets their license is exciting. The insurance quote that follows? Less so.

Adding a teen driver to your auto insurance policy is one of the most significant premium increases a family faces. Nationally, insuring a teen driver can raise premiums by 50% to 150%. But the cost of not insuring them — or insuring them improperly — is far worse.

Your Teen Got Their License. Now Here's How to Insure Them Without the Sticker Shock.

Florida law requires every licensed driver in the household to be listed on the policy. If your teenager has a license and access to a vehicle, your insurance company needs to know. Failing to disclose a licensed teen driver can result in denied claims or outright policy cancellation — exactly when you need coverage most.

Florida's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program

Florida uses a three-stage system to phase teen drivers into full driving privileges. Each stage has different insurance implications.

Stage 1: Learner’s Permit (Age 15)

Your teen can obtain a learner’s permit at 15. At this stage, they must always drive with a licensed adult in the front seat. A separate insurance policy isn’t typically required, but you should notify your insurance company as soon as the permit is issued to confirm your teen is covered under your existing policy.

Stage 2: Restricted License (Age 16)

After holding a learner’s permit for at least 12 months, completing 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night), and passing the driving exam, your teen can apply for a restricted license. Driving restrictions include:

No driving between 11 PM and 6 AM for the first year

No driving between 1 AM and 5 AM after the first year until age 18

Once your teen holds a restricted license, they must be formally added to your auto insurance policy.

Stage 3: Full License (Age 18)

All GDL restrictions are removed when the driver turns 18. Insurance requirements remain the same, but rates may begin to decrease as they build a driving history.

What Coverage Does a Teen Driver Need?

Florida law requires the same minimums for teen drivers as for any other driver:

$10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

$10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL)

But minimums aren’t adequate — especially for a new driver. We strongly recommend:

Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) — Florida doesn’t require it, but if your teen causes an accident that injures someone, you’re financially responsible without it. For families with assets to protect, this is critical.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM) — Roughly 20% of Florida drivers carry no insurance. If an uninsured driver hits your teen, UM/UIM covers the gap.

Collision and Comprehensive — If the vehicle your teen drives has any significant value, these coverages protect it against both accident damage and non-collision events like theft and storms.

How Adding a Teen Affects Your Premium

There’s no way around it: teen drivers are statistically the highest-risk group on the road. Limited experience, higher distraction rates, and less developed judgment all contribute to elevated accident rates.

The premium increase depends on several factors:

The teen’s age and gender

The vehicle they’ll be driving — a used sedan with top safety ratings costs far less to insure than a sports car

Whether they’ll be the primary driver on a specific vehicle or an occasional driver across multiple vehicles

Your existing policy structure — multi-car households often have more flexibility

Adding a teen to an existing family policy is almost always cheaper than obtaining a separate, standalone policy. If the driver is under 18, an adult must co-sign for any individual policy anyway.

Discounts That Offset the Increase

This is where working with an independent agent pays off. We shop across dozens of carriers to find every applicable discount:

Good Student Discount

Teens who maintain a B average or higher (typically 3.0 GPA) qualify for a good student discount with most carriers. Some carriers accept report cards; others require a transcript.

Driver’s Education / Defensive Driving

Completing an approved driver’s education course or defensive driving program can trigger additional discounts. Florida doesn’t mandate driver’s ed for licensure, but the insurance savings can more than cover the cost of the course.

Student Away at School

If your teen attends college more than 100 miles from home without a car on campus, many carriers offer a significant discount — sometimes reducing the teen’s portion of the premium by 30% or more.

Vehicle Choice

The car your teen drives directly impacts the premium. Vehicles with strong safety ratings, lower repair costs, and lower theft rates cost less to insure. We can help you evaluate which vehicles in your household make the most sense to assign to a teen driver.

Multi-Car and Multi-Policy Bundling

Adding the teen to a multi-car policy, or bundling auto with homeowners or renters insurance, often triggers stacking discounts that offset the teen surcharge.

What Happens If You Don't Add Your Teen to the Policy?

Some families try to save money by not disclosing a licensed teen driver. This is a mistake with serious consequences:

Claim denial — if your teen is involved in an accident and isn’t listed on the policy, the insurer can deny the claim entirely

Policy cancellation — undisclosed drivers are a material misrepresentation, which gives the carrier grounds to cancel your policy

Personal liability — without valid coverage, you’re personally responsible for all damages, injuries, and legal costs

The short-term savings aren’t worth the long-term risk.

Why Goodlad & Swank

We’re not the insurance company. We’re your agent — and that distinction matters.

Independent, not captive. A captive agent sells one company’s products. We represent dozens of carriers, which means we can shop the entire market and find the policy that actually fits your situation.

Local, not remote. Our office is at 702 Leeland Heights Blvd W in Lehigh Acres. We serve Lee and Collier Counties — Lehigh Acres, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Estero, and Naples. You’re not a policy number. You’re a neighbor.

Family-owned since 2009. Butch Swank built this agency on one idea: change the way people feel about their insurance agency. Our team — Butch, Stephanie, Mary, and the rest — treats every client like family, because that’s how this business should work.

Community-rooted. Butch serves on the Board of Lehigh Regional Medical Center, co-founded the East Lee Education Cooperative, and established the Watch D.O.G.S. program at Lehigh Elementary. Mary sits on the Board for Lehigh Community Services. We don’t just work here — we live here.
