Your Classic Car Isn’t Worth “Market Value.” Your Insurance Should Know That.
Standard auto insurance undervalues your classic car. Agreed-value coverage fixes that.
You’ve spent years — maybe decades — finding, restoring, and maintaining a vehicle that means more to you than its Kelly Blue Book number. A standard auto policy would treat it like any other used car: depreciated, commoditized, and replaceable.

You've spent years — maybe decades — finding, restoring, and maintaining a vehicle that means more to you than its Kelly Blue Book number. A standard auto policy would treat it like any other used car: depreciated, commoditized, and replaceable. It isn't. And your insurance shouldn't pretend it is. Classic car insurance, also called collector car or antique vehicle insurance, is built specifically for vehicles that appreciate rather than depreciate — and for owners who treat their cars as investments, not appliances.
The fundamental difference is agreed value vs. actual cash value.
Standard Auto Policy: Actual Cash Value (ACV)
A standard policy pays the depreciated market value of your vehicle at the time of loss. For a 40-year-old vehicle, that number can be insultingly low — even if the car is worth five or ten times that amount to a collector.
Classic Car Policy: Agreed Value
With an agreed-value policy, you and the insurer establish the vehicle’s value when the policy is written. If the car is totaled or stolen, the insurer pays that agreed amount — no depreciation, no negotiation, no lowball offers.
This is the single most important reason to carry classic car insurance instead of a standard auto policy.
Both the vehicle and the owner typically need to meet specific criteria:
Vehicle Requirements
Age: Generally 15 to 30+ years old, depending on the carrier. Vehicles 30 years or older may qualify for Florida’s antique vehicle designation from the FLHSMV.
Condition: The vehicle must be maintained in good, restorable, or fully restored condition.
Storage: Most carriers require the vehicle to be kept in an enclosed garage or secure storage facility — not parked on the street.
Usage: Classic car policies restrict the vehicle to pleasure use only — car shows, parades, club events, and occasional drives. Daily commuting is not covered.
Mileage: Most policies cap annual mileage, commonly at 2,500 to 5,000 miles per year.
Owner Requirements
Minimum age: Typically 25 years old.
Primary vehicle: You must have a separate, daily-driver vehicle insured under a standard auto policy. The classic car cannot be your only vehicle.
Clean driving record: A history of accidents or major violations can disqualify you from specialty coverage.
Agreed-Value Total Loss
If your vehicle is totaled or stolen, the insurer pays the full agreed-upon value. No depreciation formulas. No arguments.
Collision Coverage
Repairs or replacement after a collision — at a repair shop that specializes in your vehicle, not a generic body shop.
Comprehensive Coverage
Theft, fire, vandalism, storm damage, and other non-collision events. In Florida, hurricane and storm damage are real risks even for garaged vehicles.
Spare Parts and Tools Coverage
Some policies cover spare parts, tools, and memorabilia stored with the vehicle. If you keep a set of original parts for a restoration, this matters.
Flatbed Towing
Classic car policies typically guarantee flatbed towing — not a standard tow truck that can damage low-clearance or high-value vehicles.
Show and Transit Coverage
Coverage while your vehicle is being transported to or displayed at a car show, exhibition, or auction.
Florida offers specialty license plate options for qualifying vehicles:
Antique Plate: Available for vehicles that are at least 30 years old. The plate never expires as long as you own the vehicle, though annual registration renewal is still required.
Horseless Carriage Plate: For vehicles manufactured in 1945 or earlier. This plate is permanent for the duration of ownership.
Year of Manufacture (YOM) Plate: Available for vehicles manufactured in 1975 or earlier. The plate must be genuine, readable, unaltered, and match the vehicle’s model year exactly.
Our agents can walk you through which plate option fits your vehicle and how it interacts with your insurance.
This surprises most people. Because classic cars are driven less, stored securely, and maintained carefully, the risk profile is lower than a daily driver. That translates to lower premiums — often significantly lower — than insuring the same car under a standard auto policy.
The combination of lower premiums and agreed-value payout makes classic car insurance one of the best values in the insurance market for qualifying vehicles.
We’re not the insurance company. We’re your agent — and that distinction matters.
